mRemote going commercial (?)

As download counts go up and the time I work on this product steadily increases, whether it is because I'm trying to keep the known bugs list as short as possible or to make your lives easier by developing the features you ask for, I seriously think about releasing a non-GPL, commercial version of mRemote.

Don't get me wrong, I love OSS (Open Source Software) as much as you do and I really appreciated the donations I get but that doesn't change the fact that I don't have enough free time besides my day job to continue developing and supporting this product as I do right now.

This means I have to make a decision.

One way would be to slow down or completely stop development...
I really don't want to do this as I have put everything I can into making mRemote as good as it is right now and I don't want to stop it outdoing all the similar products that are out today.

The other way is to completely focus on developing the best remote connections manager available.

No question, I'd love to take the second way but it is a little risky for me, and it depends not on me but on YOU, the users or (no marketing talk) the potential buyers!

It also means I won't have much time to continue to improve the free (GPL) version. But it is out of question that I would still offer it as a free download. Also, for a commercial release I have to replace all the components and code that is released under the GPL license and buy commercial products instead. So, to get to the point, the GPL version will most likely suffer a slow death... (The same would happen sometime if I continue working on it as a side project)

Well, you will probably be interested in what other features you'd get if I'd release a payed version.

This is the preliminary feature list:
  • Full featured SQL support
  • Credential Management
  • Improved password encryption and general security
  • Better import/export functionality (with drag and drop import functions for RDP/ICA/VNC files)
  • Reporting functions
  • Bug fixes for all currently known bugs (see Bug Tracker @ SF.net) excluding those that are dependent on third parties

I plan a lot more than that but this list represents what at least should be in the first commercial release.

Of course the price would also include a one year update and support subscription.

Well, that's the story... What I now need is your opinion.
I engage you to vote by using the form below because I will take my decision mostly based on this survey.
